Baggage Policy

EL CORRE CAMINOS BAGGAGE POLICY

El Corre Caminos permits the carriage of Regular Baggage (Personal Baggage) or Baggage Express (also referred to as Excess Baggage Service) upon its vehicles only for passengers who have a valid ticket, have validly registered for travel, and have properly tagged their baggage. Passenger Baggage, not carried under the Excess Baggage Service (ECC-XB) or Package Express Service (ECC-PX), is referred to as Regular Baggage or Personal Baggage. Regular baggage must travel with a passenger in the same unit. Priority is always given to Regular Baggage over the Baggage Express Service. The Baggage Express Service takes priority over the Package Express Service.

Regular/Personal Baggage

Refers to clothes, shoes, toiletries and similar items that an individual utilizes for personal use or convenience.

Each adult passenger is permitted to bring 2 items of personal luggage at no charge. The luggage items must be permissible containers of personal baggage (permissible items). One personal luggage item should not weigh more than 25 kg (55 lb.), with measurements no greater than 36”H X 21”W X 13”D. The second personal luggage item should not weigh more than 10 kg (25 lb.) with measurements no greater than 22”H X 12”W X 9”D.

Children paying a child’s fare can bring one (1) piece of luggage of 10 kg or less  (25 lb.), measuring no more than 22”H X 12”W X 9”D, with the same characteristics as an adult luggage item. Children paying no fare are not qualified to take any personal luggage.

In all cases, El Corre Caminos will only permit the carriage of Permissible Baggage containing Permissible Items.

Permissible Baggage (containers) and Permissible Items

Permissible Baggage consist of permissible containers, such as valises, suitcases, duffle bags, secured cardboard boxes or containers of material that in the discretion of the carrier are easy to manage and do not constitute risk of damage to itself, to other items or containers, and to the equipment of El Corre Caminos and its contractors or subcontractors. Permissible Baggage may contain only securely packed Permissible Items. Permissible items are such items that a passenger utilizes for personal use or convenience, such as shoes, clothing, toiletries, and similar things.

In all cases, Permissible Baggage and Permissible Items do not consist of:

  • Cash (not permissible item)
  • Paper or plastic bags, and items contained in plastic or paper bags (not permissible baggage)
  • Negotiable instruments (not permissible item)
  • Fragile or perishable items (not permissible item)
  • Containers with attached or protruding items (not permissible baggage)
  • Guns and other weapons, and any form of explosive (not permissible item)
  • Items that could be used as weapons (not permissible item)
  • Foul smelling items (not permissible item)
  • Ice chests, except they contain cloth or other permissible items, or they are empty (not permissible baggage)
  • Items containing or which are any type of liquids or food, including frozen items (not permissible item)

  • Other containers or items which El Corre Caminos determines, in its reasonable discretion, are not permissible Baggage or Permissible Items.

Express Baggage or Excess Baggage Service (ECC-XB)

Under its Excess Baggage Service, El Corre Caminos may, in its discretion and if there is space, carry for a fee, baggage of passengers which is not permitted as Personal Baggage, or which exceeds the permitted baggage allowed, free of charge. The Excess Baggage service is only available to passengers and is offered from and to El Corre Caminos stations or stop points only; it is not available for shippers using the Package Express Service. Items that are of such dimension or shape that they are difficult to manage, will not be accepted for transportation at all. El Corre Caminos will not accept items which do not constitute Permissible Baggage if it is determined they may cause harm to other items transported, to passengers, and/or to company staff or equipment including to contractors and subcontractors.  In all cases, El Corre Caminos will not carry items which are not Permissible Items. Passengers and their allowed baggage must travel in the same vehicle at same time.

El Corre Caminos gives precedence to Regular Baggage of passengers. Baggage Excess will be accepted only if it is possible to place such items on the same vehicle upon which the passenger is traveling. It is not guaranteed that passengers will be able to carry any item under the Excess Baggage Service. All passenger’s belongings must be claimed at transfer points or destination.

Articles prohibited for transportation include but are not limited to:

Acids, batteries containing liquid acids, ammunitions, animals, combustible liquids, compressed gases, cremated remains, explosives, firearms of all types, fireworks, flammable material, hazardous materials, (poisons, radioactive material, etc.) matches, articles with a disagreeable odor, perishables, others that to the company’s discretion may not be accepted for transportation.

El Corre Caminos reserves the right to open a container presented for regular baggage or baggage express.

Excess baggage must have an excess baggage tag attached to it that is given to the passenger when paying the fee for this service.

Tagging and Loading of Baggage

  • For both Regular Baggage and the Excess Baggage Service, it is the responsibility of passengers to identify their baggage as their personal baggage by placing official El Corre Caminos tags on all their luggage. They must request these tags at El Corre Caminos locations at the time of registration. Each passenger may be given up to two (2) free tags for their Regular Baggage. If the passenger needs more tags for the luggage permitted, extra tags will be provided at an extra cost. Passengers must write their name on the tags and tie them to the luggage items and must keep the tag stubs. Passengers need to provide the tag stubs when claiming their baggage at each transfer or at their destination; if tags are lost, passengers need to present I.D. in order to retrieve their baggage. If passengers do not show I.D., or the name on the I.D. does not match the name on the baggage tags and/or on our manifest, or there is no name on the baggage tag, then the baggage may be retained by the company until ownership of the baggage can be established.
  • Passengers must protect and pack their items securely for bus transportation.
  • Passengers are responsible for handling their baggage. Drivers will receive baggage from each passenger at the baggage compartment area of the bus during the loading process and they will return the baggage to passengers at the baggage compartment area of the bus upon arrival at their destination. Sometimes, dispatchers will assist with loading and unloading baggage, but they will not carry baggage for passengers from one place to another. It is the responsibility of passengers to ensure that all their baggage is loaded on the proper vehicle for travel, and for transferring their baggage to the correct vehicle at transfer points.
  • Passengers who load their baggage but fail for any reason to travel on the correct vehicle must immediately contact the station of origin in order to make all possible efforts to recover their personal belongings, with the understanding that El Corre Caminos cannot guarantee recovery. If an item is recovered, it will be held at El Corre Caminos’ next station or at the destination station; passengers need to pick up their items where the items are located. Should passengers cancel their travel and personal items are left in our property, the items need to be picked up the same day, or passengers may use El Corre Caminos Package Express Service to have their items sent to another station. Items not claimed when required will be stored by El Corre Caminos for a short period.
  • Items left in the property of El Corre Caminos will be held in the origin or destination station for 3 (three) days; after that, they will be stored at the main office for 30 days from date of travel at a daily fee of $1.00+  per item after the 15th day. Articles may be released when storage fees and other charges are completely paid.
  • Unclaimed baggage will be disposed of by El Corre Caminos at completion of 30 days from the date of travel, or in accordance with current laws.

Unclaimed Baggage

It is a passenger’s responsibility to collect their Baggage, whether it is Regular Baggage or Baggage Express from the vehicle upon arrival at their destination or transfer point. If a baggage is not collected, El Corre Caminos will store the item(s) at the station of destination for three days; after that period, the item(s) will be sent to the principal station.  Passengers will have to submit a claim to the lost and found, in order to recover their belongings. El Corre Caminos will not accept responsibility for belongings left unattended.

Claims for Loss or Damage of Baggage

All Claims for lost or damaged baggage must comply with General Order 139-B of the California Public Utilities Commission. Passengers must file all claims before they leave the destination terminal/station. If the terminal is closed, the passenger must advise the driver of the loss or damage and call the main office the following day to report the situation. For a valid claim, passengers must present their validly registered used ticket, baggage tag stubs, and a current valid identification (e.g., I.D., driver’s license, passport, Consular card, or other government issued I.D.)  Claims must be in writing.  Items in the care of passengers are excluded from the carrier's responsibility.

Claims for damage to items must establish that the item was damaged while under the care of El Corre Caminos. The company accepts no responsibility for loss of or damage to baggage left unattended by the passenger in the company’s property. If the baggage is lost and El Corre Caminos cannot find it within 15 days of receipt of a claim, it will notify the passenger accordingly. El Corre Caminos will resolve all claims within 60 days of receipt of the claim, provided that the passenger delivers the evidence requested within reasonable time.

El Corre Caminos will not return lost and found items, unless the passenger presents proper identification to establish their ownership. El Corre Caminos will only deliver such items to third parties if the property owner authorizes a third party to receive the baggage on passenger’s behalf; the third party must show a current valid I.D. before receiving the item(s).

Passengers who disembark before their destination may not be able to get their baggage, because it may be inaccessible to the driver since luggage is placed according to destinations and in the order it is received for loading. In such cases, passengers must arrange immediately with the bus operator and with the station of destination to pick up their belongings. If baggage is not collected within 24 hours, it will be treated as unclaimed and it will follow the unclaimed baggage policy procedure.
